Background of the Study: Childhood obesity is a growing global concern, with significant health risks that can extend into adulthood, including diabetes, cardiovascular diseases, and psychological issues (Raji et al., 2024). In Kano State, the prevalence of childhood obesity is rising, fueled by factors such as poor dietary habits, lack of physical activity, and limited awareness among parents and caregivers about proper nutrition (Adeniran et al., 2023). Nurses, being at the forefront of patient education, have a critical role to play in addressing childhood obesity. Nurse-led nutrition education can empower both children and parents with the knowledge needed to make healthier food choices, promote physical activity, and establish healthy routines that can prevent or reduce obesity (Odugbemi et al., 2025).
However, the effectiveness of nurse-led nutrition education programs in addressing childhood obesity in Kano State has not been widely researched. Given the high levels of food insecurity and the cultural importance placed on certain foods in the region, understanding how nurses can best contribute to the prevention and reduction of childhood obesity through nutrition education is essential. This study aims to assess the effectiveness of nurse-led nutrition education programs in reducing childhood obesity in Kano State.
Statement of the Problem: The increasing prevalence of childhood obesity in Kano State is a significant public health challenge, and despite various interventions, the problem persists. There is a need for more effective, community-based interventions to address the underlying causes of childhood obesity. Nurses, with their expertise in health education, have a critical role in promoting healthier eating habits. However, the effectiveness of nurse-led nutrition education programs in Kano State has not been well-documented, and this study seeks to fill this gap by evaluating their impact on childhood obesity.
